The title of this concert between jazz guitarists Mark Whitfield and J.K. is Soul Conversations. Problem is, they forgot to bring the soul and it's a pretty redundant discussion after about five minutes. Sure, there are fans of this type of self-absorbed, virtuoso jazz-guitar playing out there, but most people hear this type of music playing from airport bathrooms. You know the stuff: it's the light, airy "smooth jazz" that Steely Dan tried to pass off as fusion. The chops displayed are impressive, and obviously Whitfield and J.K. figured their contrasting styles would open up musical worlds, but it never happens. Whitfield, a respected guitarist who's played with the Marsalis brothers and claims influence from George Benson, is the laid-back picker, bringing a heavy dose of wah-wah, while J.K. does his best Steve Vai imitation, ripping and blasting through solos in the same range whatever the number. -- Dave McCoy
