Blues, R&B, Jazz | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 67:34 min | 163 MB + 5% Recovery
Label: Ace Records | Tracks: 24 | Rls.date: 2015

After an extended break, Ace's King Acetates Series resumes this month with a second compilation by iconic rhythm & blues man Roy Brown. Pay Day Jump focuses predominantly on the sides that Roy cut for DeLuxe records after King Records founder and boss Syd Nathan bought the label in late 1949. Hard Luck Blues, Boogie At Midnight, Love Don't Love Nobody and all of Roy's other big records for DeLuxe from the period are included all sounding better than they have ever done as they are mastered from recently-minted transfers of the original King acetates. Eight of the 24 selections are either completely unissued performances or previously unissued alternate takes, making this a must for even the most ardent Roy Brown collector.

Blake Aaron has already scored Top Five Billboard airplay hits with his Latin flavored single "Encantadora," featuring Najee on the flute, the soulful jazz tune "You're The One For Me," featuring vocalist Spencer Day, and the slamming old school jam "Groove-O-Matic." Aaron also released as singles, the Latin dance romp "Sol Amor" and the mid-tempo R&B romance "You're My Miracle." Soul Stories' latest single, "Wes Side Story," is a spirited 60's soul jazz excursion that takes Aaron back to one of his key guitar influences, the great Wes Montgomery. Though fans have heard some of the tales on Soul Stories over the airwaves these past few years, the full-length collection features several new tracks including the Hall & Oates 70's pop/soul classic "Sara Smile, " "Story Of My Life," a balmy atmospheric South American fusion of Argentine tango and Brazilian vibes...

"If I were responsible for an album as good as this, I’d be shouting about it but the package lacks information apart from recording and personnel details plus track listings. There does however seem to be a hidden structure and possibly a narrative to the 12 tracks. The music isn’t lapel-grabbing but it does speak persuasively and in a variety of mood, with a spirit of basic consensus that allows the tunes to develop with everyone making significant statements.

"...But overall, these performances are more cool jazz than soul-jazz. Soul Bird: Whiffenpoof (which Verve reissued on CD in 2002) isn't among Tjader's essential albums, but it's an enjoyable demonstration of the vibist's ability to be a bit more commercial than usual and still maintain his bop-based integrity." ~allmusicguide

"Essential Elements" is the debut release for the highly-talented pianist Ben Paterson. Originally from Philadelphia, Ben spent his younger years studying both jazz and classical before moving to Chicago where he refined his approach as the pianist for the late, legendary Von Freeman. On "Essential Elements," Paterson presents a fresh take on a number of standards as well as some compelling original compositions in a standard trio format. The overlay of different musical styles combined with the jazz-influenced arrangements make for a great blend.

Edward Vesala - Lum (1987)
MP3 320 kbps CBR | 44:46 min | 104 MB
Genre: Jazz | Label: ECM

This album marked Vesala's return to ECM a decade after his last release for the label, Satu. Only one musician remained from his last appearance, Pentti Lahti. However, the aesthetic remains the same: a sensuous kind of free jazz with an air of ritual, and one tune from long ago reappears in a new guise ("The Wind" off the Nan Madol album). Most of the tracks here have something very distinctive about them, even if the instrumental lines wildly proliferate in the free jazz fashion. "Frozen Melody" opens with a beautiful introduction from Lahti that sounds like mid-period Coltrane. "Calypso Bulbosa" suddenly turns things electric and slightly funky with its electronic drums. "Fingo" bizarrely alludes to marching band music. The closing "Together" puts Björkenheim's electric guitar in the spotlight.

EAC | FLAC | Tracks (Cue&Log) ~ 1.12 Gb (incl 5%) | Time: 02:53:37 | Scans included
Genre: Jazz-Funk, Fusion, Contemporary Jazz | Label: Brainfeeder | # BFCD050

The Epic is saxophonist Kamasi Washington's aptly titled, triple-length, 172-minute debut album for Brainfeeder. He is a veteran of L.A.'s music scene and has played with Gerald Wilson, Harvey Mason, Flying Lotus, and Kendrick Lamar (his horn is prominently featured on To Pimp a Butterfly), to name but a few. Most of his bandmates have played together since high school, and it shows. There are two drummers (including Ronald Bruner), two bassists (including Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner on electric), two keyboardists, trumpet, trombone, and vocals (Patrice Quinn). In various settings, they are supported by a string orchestra and full choir conducted by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Washington composed 13 of these 17 tunes; he also meticulously arranged and produced them. At just over six to nearly 15 minutes, the jams leave room for engaged improvisation. The Epic is based on a concept, though it's unnecessary to grasp in order to enjoy. The music reflects many inspirations -- John Coltrane, Horace Tapscott's Pan-African People's Arkestra, Azar Lawrence's Prestige period, Donald Byrd's and Eddie Gale's jazz and choir explorations, Pharoah Sanders' pan global experiments, Afro-Latin jazz, spiritual soul, and DJ culture.

Orrin Keepnews' commentary (from the original liner notes): “This is Blue Mitchell's third album as a leader. The first two were very good and well worth the attention of the jazz-listening public. But this present album is something else. It represents so definite and striking a forward step…with this recording Blue would seem to have stepped over the invisible line: He is no longer merely 'promising,' he has arrived...The most significant 'new' factor in the sound and content of Mitchell's playing is something best described as confidence, or authority.”

Pianist Jacky Terrasson's Impulse! Records debut, 2015's Take This, is a sophisticated showcase for his virtuoso jazz chops and eclectic musical taste. Following up his 2012 effort, Gouache, Take This finds Terrasson investigating a mix of originals and unexpected covers, many of which are infused with a strong African and Cuban rhythmic influence. Supplying much of this rhythmic intensity is Terrasson's adventurous outfit featuring bassist Burniss Travis, drummer Lukmil Perez, and Malian percussionist Adama Diarra. Together, this group is responsible for many of the album's brightest moments, with updates of such classic jazz piano numbers as Bud Powell's "Un Poco Loco," and Miles Davis' "Blue and Green," to name a few.

Born in France. While studying classical clarinet and alto saxophone at Toulouse Conservatory, Tissendier began playing jazz. His interests followed a chronological path, starting with New Orleans music, passing through the mainstream into bop. In 1977 he joined the big band led by Claude Bolling and also worked with Gerard Badini and others. In the early 80s he taught at the Paris School of Jazz and in 1983 formed a sextet especially to recreate the music of John Kirby. In demand for club and festival dates, the band won many awards for both live performances and records. In 1987 Tissendier formed Saxomania, a seven-piece band featuring two alto saxophones, two tenors and three rhythm.
