Maysa - Back 2 Love (2015)
EAC Rip | Flac (Tracks + cue + log) | 322 MB | MP3 320Kbps CBR | 121 MB | 1 CD | Full Scans
Genre: Jazz - R&B - Soul | Label: Shanachie | Catalog Number: 5434

Back 2 Love, Maysa's eighth release for the Shanachie label, marks 20 years for the singer as a solo artist. She was as active as ever when the album was released, coming off her first Grammy nomination and gigs with Incognito and her own band. Once more, she works closely with fellow songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Chris "Big Dog" Davis, and J.R. Hutson (son of Chicago soul giant Leroy Hutson) also assists on a handful of cuts. Stokley Williams takes over as composer and producer on "Keep It Movin'," a highlight on which the Mint Condition leader also plays everything and duets with Maysa. The song has the same traits -- the brightness, that slight bounce and lilt -- as Mint Condition's best. Another guest appearance comes from labelmate Phil Perry, who joins in for "Last Chance for Love," a sparkling slow jam. Back 2 Love works through a multitude of styles, from stomping house with pure disco-soul lineage (the title track and "Miracle") to highly melodic retro-modern pop ("The Radio Played Our Song"), but the quality of the songs is consistent. Filled with typically refined adult contemporary R&B and some pleasant surprises, this is among Maysa's most pleasing solo albums.

Style: Krautrock, Lo-Fi, Lounge | Label: Alien Transistor

The Alien Ensemble, an acoustic project from a member of electronica act Notwist, falls into territory originally scoped out by Todd Sickafoose’s Tiny Resistors… a place where modern jazz blends in neatly with indie-pop, chamber, post-rock, minimalism, folk, and really any other influence from any other genre that seems to fit at the time. Their self-titled album Alien Ensemble is a mesmerizing blend of influences that presents a cohesive sound very easy to connect with.

This is one more proof that jazz, and blues for that matter, turned to be a universal language. Roots Magic is an Italian quartet, and yes, they play the Blues. A sort of Avant-Garde Blues, to be more exact. The group consists of Alberto Popolla – clarinets, Errico Defabritiis – alto sax, Gianfranco Tedeschi – double bass and Fabrizio Spera – drums, plus guest Luca Venitucci – organ. Two of the tracks of this album are from members of the band but the main content is formed by covers.

Genre: Jazz, Vocal Jazz, Blues, R&B, Soul | Label: Mocking Bird

Ray Charles was the musician most responsible for developing soul music. Singers like Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson also did a great deal to pioneer the form, but Charles did even more to devise a new form of black pop by merging '50s R&B with gospel-powered vocals, adding plenty of flavor from contemporary jazz, blues, and (in the '60s) country. Then there was his singing; his style was among the most emotional and easily identifiable of any 20th century performer, up there with the likes of Elvis and Billie Holiday. He was also a superb keyboard player, arranger, and bandleader. The brilliance of his 1950s and '60s work, however, can't obscure the fact that he made few classic tracks after the mid-'60s, though he recorded often and performed until the year before his death...

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. A seminal work in the development of the career of Cedar Walton – the formation of his excellent Eastern Rebellion ensemble, a group that became a platform for soul jazz expression for the next two decades! The group on this set features George Coleman on tenor, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all working in territory that Walton and Clifford Jordan were exploring heavily at the time – long, drawn-out soul jazz tunes – frequently built upon modal rhythms, and touched with traces of post-Coltrane blowing. The key factor, though, is that the work's never too outside, never too overindulgent – just hard-swinging soul jazz, in a 70s expression of the older Blue Note ideal! Titles include "Bolivia", "5/4 Thing", "Mode For Joe", and "Naima".

A compelling Bethlehem set from reedman Sam Most – a date that's possibly his most sophisticated session for the label, thanks to arrangements from producer Teddy Charles! Charles sets up Most in a "with strings" format here – but one that's a bit more laidback than usual – as the tunes are somewhat long for the setting, and often feature Sam's solos snaking out wonderfully on flute, tenor, and a bit of clarinet. Jimmy Raney plays a bit of guitar on the record, but the main charm comes from the interplay between Most's reeds and the strings – which really comes off with a dark sort of sound overall, one that clearly marks Charles' presence on the record. Titles include "Lover Man", "When Your Lover Has Gone", "Alone Together", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "You Stepped Out Of A Dream".

Quantic Presents The Western Transient is the latest project from Will “Quantic” Holland, bringing together a handpicked band of some of his favourite musicians to realise a set of new compositions paying homage to the rich, lively and intimate quality of the classic soul and jazz recordings. The resulting album, 'A New Constellation', is out 31st July on Tru Thoughts (with a deluxe, handmade hardback gatefold vinyl edition); in characteristically mercurial fashion this new outing sees Holland following up the explosive, worldly electronic and vocal direction of his last solo album, 'Magnetica', with a suite of traditionally recorded pieces that capture the spontaneous beauty in the old ways of music making.

Dave Stryker - Messin With Mister T (2015)
MP3 320 kbps CBR | 70:32 min | 165 MB
Genre: Jazz | Label: Strikezone Records

Dave Stryker celebrates the man he worked with for over a decade Stanley Turrentine, Mister T with ten of the greatest tenor sax players on the scene today. Now here s a winning hand: Dave Stryker's organ trio, ten of the world's finest tenor saxophone players, and the legacy of Stanley Turrentine. You could call it a tribute to the late tenor great, but given Stryker's audacious title, Mister T looms here more like an enduring challenge than an icon of past glories. The Pittsburgh native died 15 years ago, but he remains synonymous with soulfulness. Messin' with Mister T is Dave Stryker s personal homage to Turrentine, whom he toured with for over a decade and recorded with twice.

Eva Cassidy - Live At Blues Alley (1997)
MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 13 Tracks | 57:34 | 134 MB
Genre: Jazz, Vocal Jazz, Blues, Folk, Rock | Label: Blix Street

The late Eva Cassidy gained a loyal following in the Washington, D.C., area through appearances in small clubs, utilizing her pitch-perfect singing voice to interpret a variety of tunes ranging from standards to modern-era pop songs. A notoriously shy performer, Eva Cassidy had a somewhat stiff stage presence, but she endeared herself to her audiences by performing songs she obviously loved, combining elements of soul, gospel, blues, and jazz. Live at Blues Alley is an excellent showcase for her vocal talents and her ability to make even the most familiar tune uniquely her own. Admittedly, the titles on Live at Blues Alley seem like a set list for a bad Vegas lounge act; songs such as Irving Berlin's "Cheek to Cheek" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" have been done to death for decades. Fortunately, Eva Cassidy had...

Though based in Germany, acoustic jazz quartet Quadro Nuevo devoted its creative energies to resurrecting the fading musical traditions of Europe as a whole, in particular embracing the tango. Guitarist Robert Wolf, reedist Mulo Francel, accordionist Andreas Hinterseher, and bassist D.D. Lowka co-founded Quadro Nuevo in Salzburg in 1996. Originally commissioned to write and produce film music for the Austrian broadcaster ORF, the four musicians immediately bonded over their eclectic musical backgrounds and shared affection for nostalgia, and in the decade to follow they played more than 1,500 live dates across the continent, forging an alchelmical acoustic sound from elements of flamenco, Balkan swing, traditional folk, and avant-garde improvisation. Issuing their debut album, Luna Rossa, in 1998, ...

A strangely wonderful album from Marion Brown – quite different from his other work on Impulse, with a mellow electric edge that gives it a warm and laidback feel! The approach here is much more soulful than before – with finely crafted tunes that weave Brown's work on alto with electric piano by Anthony Davis and Stanley Cowell, percussion by Ed Blackwell and Jimmy Hopps, and bass by Reggie Workman. If you're expecting the angrier Brown from earlier years, you'll be disappointed – but if you're ready to hear a Brown that's gently crafting mellow lines in a soulful setting, then you're in for a treat. Tracks include Cowell's "Maimoun", Stevie Wonder's "Visions", Brown's "Vista", "Moment of Truth", "Bismillah Rrahimani Rrahim", and "Djinji".

Bechet made several outstanding albums in France, mostly with Claude Luter's orchestra. On this one, he plays soprano sax much more than clarinet. The arrangements are outstanding, and the sound quality is special. No Bechet fan (or clarinet/sax fan) should be without this! Sidney Bechet needs no introduction to lovers of traditional New Orleans jazz. Like many African-American musicians, he found a deeper recognition in Europe, and so settled in France and made many recordings during the 1950's for the French Vogue label. These have now been collected, remastered and reissued on a French release by Sony Legacy. It's good to have this available through Amazon. Essential for any collector of traditional jazz...
